Dealing with feeling insecure

As part of our topic “Say why…do we hate how we look” this month, you guys responded to our Instagram polls to tell us that dealing with insecurities is something you’d like to know more on, so, we’ve got you covered with our first blog of the month.

The truth is, everyone is insecure about something, whether they admit it or not. Growing up surrounded by social media influencers, celebrities and just everyone else trying to fit in, there can be a lot placed on us from a young age.

So, let’s go through some tips to dealing with insecurities;

  • Accept what you can and can’t change. In life there are just some things you can’t change, so accepting them early on can give you room to focus on what you can. If you want to improve your fitness levels, you can do this, for example. Focus your time and energy (and headspace!) onto elements you can work with, not on things that really we have no control over.
  • Realise that no one notices the things you think they do. Do you ever walk down the street and notice someone’s nose shape, or that they have a birthmark on their arm? Nope, me neither. If you think of it this way, no one really notices the details of you that you may be insecure about. I’ve never looked twice at someone’s nose yet am convinced people stare at mine all day long. The hard truth is no one else notices yet alone really cares, we all spend far too much time thinking about ourselves!
  • Learn to embrace what makes you, you! You may not realise it now, but the things you’re insecure about in your teenage years may become the features you love most about yourself in years to come. Think about how boring it would be if we all looked the same, having something ‘unique’ about you is something to be proud of.
  • Stop comparing yourself to others. Now yes, we are all guilty of this and scrolling through Instagram is a sure fire way to feel a little bit down about yourself. If someone you follow posts content that makes you feel insecure about yourself, just unfollow them! It also helps to realise that everyone (yes, including us, let’s be real) only post what we want others to see of us on social media. The sooner we know it’s not 100% real the easier it is for us not to compare.
